I certainly didn’t expect to write this, but Sylvain Bzikot’s 2023 village Puligny Montrachet is even better than his outstanding 2022 edition. It’s from several plots of vines above the village of Puligny including the parcel known as Les Petites Nosroyes (vines that made up the wine Sylvain made for us more than a decade ago). Farmed carefully, harvested by hand, and then made 60% in steel for fruit and freshness and 40% in barrel (about 20% new) for roundness and spice, it’s pretty classic Puligny-Montrachet.
Give it a swirl and you're greeted by classic Puligny-Montrachet scents of wet stones, toasted hazelnut, golden apple, white peach and cultured butter. The palate is lively and managed to stay deliciously fresh while also showing excellent density and richness. The late-summer stone fruit core gets a lift from zesty yellow and green citrus before the hazelnut, salted caramel and mineral flavors emerge on a mouthwatering, long, finish. In a vintage where lack of concentration can be an issue, Sylvain Bzikot has somehow crafted one of the most concentrated village Puligny whites he's ever made. This is pretty stunning. The price is flat out astonishing.
For You If: You enjoy Puligny Montrachet’s captivating blend of power and finesses and want to enjoy drinking one now and for years at a very good price; you’re about to eat something rich and earthy – think scallops with cream and mushrooms – and want a perfect pairing to enjoy, too.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the buttery fatness of Meursault – which, to be honest, we also like a lot! But this is more mineral and sleek in feel.
