This is a terrific example of the heights reached by the very old Fiano grape grow on the hillsides near the little town of Avellino in Campania. It’s an old grape, grown in Campania for hundreds of years and possibly the grape Pliny the Elder called viti apiane. It was the most widely planted grape in Campania until phylloxera came in the late 19th Century, and then almost forgotten (in favor of heavier yielding Falanghina) until the 1980s. Now, once again, it is clearly one of Campania's finest white grapes (at least when grown and made at Quintodecimo!).
As always, this comes from a seven-hectare vineyard near Lapio at around 570 meters elevation. On first pour, it’s all about precision and drive with a sleek texture and boatloads of minerality. As it opens, the fruit comes forward to perfectly balance the zingy acids and crunchy minerality. Delicious now and will age beautifully.
For You If: You're looking for something sharp and linear and built to complement super-fresh, simply prepared, seafood perfectly.
Not For You If: You're after something richer/rounder - this is more about minerality and energy.
