Lower ABVPretty much exactly what you hope for in top-notch Gavi di Gavi if you're a fan - and a terrific introduction to one of Italy's most famous whites if you're a new Gavi explorer! The Gavi growing region is technically in Piemonte, but it's actually closer to Genoa (just an hour away) than Alba and the Barolo and Barbaresco zones. The Cortese grape evolved here several hundred years ago, and it's been cited as the best white grape of the region (and one of the greats of Italy) since the mid-1600s.
The wine is made by one of Italy's most famous and important consulting winemakers, Beppe Caviola who brings two-plus decades to bear on the project and does...not much at all. Picked ripe and fresh (12.5% alcohol), the fruit ferments naturally in tank and rests on the fine lees for a few months before bottling. Which lets the beauty of Cortese shine through. You'll find aromas of lime, green apple, tangy stone fruit, tangerine, herb and chalk bursting nicely from the glass. Energetic flavors of lemon pulp, nectarine, lemon and lime really "pop" on the mid-palate and are driven through a mouthwatering finish by generous acidity and some dusty mineral notes. It's round enough to be friendly and serious enough to pay attention to and a great match for anything brought in from the sea. But also a fantastic match to traditional Ravioli a Culo Nudo al Gavi, meat and greens filled ravioli with a dusting of cheese and splash of Gavi at the end.
