This is a fabulous bargain in very high-end Etna red. It's mainly Nerello Mascalese with a smattering of the softer Nerello Cappuccio from sites across the north slopes of the volcano. It’s wonderfully layered and complex, with bold aromas and flavors of very ripe wild strawberry and raspberry, a twist of scortched orange peel, and a mineral note that is what you’d imagine Etna’s lava would taste like on a hot, sunny, day.
For You If: A wine that has the fruit and flavor intensity of Brunello, the finesse and perfume of Burgundy and the fine, grippy, finish of a fine Barolo sounds good to you.
Not For You If: You're looking for something thick or super-rich - this is a big wine, but stays crunchy and vibrant.
"There is freshness here with redcurrants, pomegranate, black pepper, flowers and earthy notes. Medium- to full-bodied, this has sweet fruit on the palate, velvety tannins, an integrated, refreshing acidity and a brilliant finish. Delicious to drink now, though this crunchy wine has aging potential."
