Organic/Bio Francois Chidaine is most famous for his brilliant Chenin Blancs from Montlouis on the north side of the Loire River where he lives and has his winery. He makes equally astonishing wines across the river in Vouvray, farming his grapes organically, limiting yields, and picking by hand at optimal ripeness. But because he takes the grapes home to Montlouis to press and ferment, he can't legally call these wines "Vouvray." A stupid rule designed to prevent some of the very best Vouvray from being made by a Montlouis winegrower.
Whatever you call it, this is brilliant. It's from Chidaine's younger vines - 15 years and less - in his three Cru Vouvray vineyards. As Wine Advocate said of the 94 point 2022, it's "a graceful and ethereal wine. It opens with delicate aromas of ripe pear, white flowers and subtle spices. Medium- to full-bodied, it is pure and weightless yet possesses notable depth at the core and an elegantly structured and mineral mid-palate, concluding with a long, saline finish." Big yum here.
For You If: You love wines that are intense in flavor from first to last but somehow still feel light and bright; you're after a pairing for a dish with fresh or aged goat cheese - this was born for that!
Not For You If: You're after something sweet - this is a bone-dry "Sec" Vouvray; you prefer wines that feel thick or dense on your palate - this is all about the lightness and freshness.
