With Greco and Fiano, Falanghina is one the old Greek grapes that still makes the finest wines of Campania, just inland of Naples, Italy. Especially on the powdery volcanic soils of Sannio, where Libero Rillo and his family have grown and vinified Falanghina for more than 150 years. This is his “fresh” Falanghina, going from vine to stainless steel to bottle with no oak and just a touch of time on the lees (spent yeast cells) to amplify the texture without diminishing the wine’s boisterous fruit.
For such simple winemaking, there’s so much going on here! bold, expressive, scents of ripe apple, nectarine, mid-summer honeysuckle and ripe Meyer lemon. The flavors are generous and complex, too, with notes of pear and peach orchard fruit complemented by fresh orange and yellow citrus and salty stone mineral flavors. But what really makes this so fantastic zest and zing – entering with rapier-like focus and driving the flavors all the way to the back of your palate and propelling a long, mouthwateringly, salty/citric finish. All while staying generous and round enough for cocktail sipping. A winner!
For You If: You enjoy other refreshing whites like Pinot Grigio, Verdicchio, Verdejo, Albarino, etc; you love the minerality of Sancerre and Chablis and want that in a more intensely flavorful package; you’re looking for the perfect white for seafood pasta and/or Pizza Margherita – this was born for that!
Not For You If: You’re in the mood for a quiet, restrained, white – this is pretty exuberant; you’re after the toasty oak spice and vanilla of a barrel-aged wine – this is done all in tank.
