Ignore the label - this is actually Ch Canon Chaigneau Cuvee 8A packaged with a different label because the importer didn't like the "real" bottle shape! While this is 96% Merlot plus Cab Franc, there's nothing "plummy" going on in this powerful young Bordeaux. Elevage in concrete lets the generous blue/black fruit really shine and highlights varietal accents of black tea, sage and earth. It's a big wine with solid grip that invites enjoying with lamb or steak tonight and will support 6-7 years of growth in cellar. And has enough fruit to invite Napa fans to get to know the joys of Right Bank Bordeaux!
Vinous described it well in their 92 point review, "The 2022 Cuve 8a has an open bouquet with scents of granite filtering through black fruit, making it obvious there is no wood aging here. The palate is medium-bodied, quite fresh and open with pliant tannins and touches of cedar and black pepper toward the elegant finish. This is a delightful Lalande-de-Pomerol."
For You If: You like plenty of fruit in your young Bordeaux to go with more traditional savory accents; you're looking for Bordeaux to serve with grilled meats that will more than satisfy New World red fans without leaving behind the Bordeaux tradition you love.
Not For You If: You're looking for something really smooth or velvety - the rich fruit is balanced by solid tannic structure here.
