Unlike most Patricia Green Pinot Noirs, this is not a single-vineyard wine. Instead, the goal here is to give an overview of the volcanic Jory soils of the Dundee Hills - touching Ribbon Ridge, but so very, very, different. It's mainly Pommard clone from Balcombe, Durant, Weber and the unnamed site used for "Mysterious." There's a little whole cluster in the ferment but no new wood so that the soils and sites can shine through.
For me, volcanic soil Pinot is always a unique blend of dark red fruit - raspberry, cherry - with dark, dusky, notes of smoke and toasted spice. You'll find exactly that here, plus a broad base-note of cola and top-notes of lavender, orange peel, and loads of crush rock. The wine unwinds in the glass to add layers and depth and the finish is long, pure, and seamless, with super fine-grained tannins and floral cherry cola flavor lingering on. The tension between 2021's bright freshness and energy, on one side, and the vineyards' propensity to darkness, on the other, is really compelling.
