Chorey-les-Beaune has always been a red wine village, taking advantage of limestone-laced clay soils that Pinot Noir loves. But here and there you’ll find patches of vineyard where the limestone that has washed down from the Grand Cru hill of Corton is more prevalent. That’s Chardonnay country, and over the years Pascal and Alain Maillard have replanted four of these patches to create their Chorey-les-Beaune Blanc.
And, in 2020, it’s really, really, good. It takes a little air and swirling to wake up the wine, but then it shows lovely aromas of yellow apple, white peach, fresh lemon pulp, butter-toasted hazelnuts and a nice touch of sweet spice. In the mouth it feels light at first before gaining depth and breadth, pumping out generous ripe pear, apple and peach fruit lifted by a nice dollop of super-ripe lemon. The hazelnut, toast and tangy cultured butter notes build through a lovely, long, mouthwatering finish. Chorey Blanc is rare - <8% of production – and Pascal makes only 800 or so cases of this in a good year. There will be only 200 cases of 2021, so now’s the time to stock up on this delicious, affordable, white Burgundy while you can.
