The name here has a great double meaning. “La Combe Vert” can mean “The Green Valley,” a nice description off the lovely vineyards in the Eola Hills where Ken and Erica live and make wine. But it can also mean “The Green Fault.” Ken and Erica made their first vintage of Walter Scott Pinot in a back corner of Patricia Green Cellars’ winery with permission and encouragement from co-winemakers Jim Anderson and Patty Green. So, as they like to say, it’s Patty’s “fault” that they are winemakers today.
I get why the Advocate focused on the wine's elegance and lightness when tasting it last year, but make no mistake: this is substantial Pinot Noir (if only a bit over 13% alcohol). It starts off trim and focused on entry but then the flavors of huckleberry, cherry, smoke and earth spread out and get fuller and deeper before fine, almost crisp, tannins refocus the long, dark-fruited and rich, finish. Already deeply satisfying (especially with duck, pork or mushrooms), it's going to grow further in cellar for a decade-plus. A terrific wine.
"Medium ruby-purple, the 2021 Pinot Noir La Combe Verte offers bright blueberry and cranberry on the nose with touches of flint, tar, lavender and juniper. The light-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing with elegant, earthy fruit and a long, perfumed finish. 1,200 cases of this elegant Pinot Noir were made."
