“Super-Tuscan” wines don’t have to be “super” – the term came about in the 1980s to describe wines like Sassicaia and Sammarco that failed to qualify for any Tuscan DOC label (usually because they used the “wrong” grapes) but still generated plenty of critical praise and consumer demand. But “super” is a fine descriptor for this blend of equal parts Cabernet Sangiovese, Merlot and Sangiovese grown in the prime Chianti village of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Very dense plantings and multiple green harvests keep yields super low here, allowing capturing both the ripeness and elegance of the outstanding 2019 harvest. A great match for a rich pasta-and-meat-sauce dish or a good hunk of beef or lamb.
“The 2019 Al Passo is rich, ample and generous. Healthy dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon turbocharge Sangiovese, adding depth and structure. Red-fleshed Sangiovese fruit emerges over time. The 2019 is deep and quite fleshy, but also has a good deal of brightness to balance some of its more overt leanings."
“A firm, polished red with subtle blackberry, blueberry and violet aromas, as well as some cedar, following through to a full body with fresh acidity, chewy tannins and a linear finish.”
