Lower ABV Daniel Callan’s mission is to highlight the terroir of the Central Coast through the lens of old-vine field blends, like this wild combination of 56% Napa Gamay (a.k.a. Valdiguié), 20% Black Malvoisie (a.k.a. Cinsaut), 12% Cabernet Pfeffer and 12% mixed black varieties, all from vines grown from cuttings taken from pre-Prohibition vineyards. Something like what you’d have found in a wine called “California Burgundy” in the late 1800s/early 20th century.
It drinks like a cross between Grenache and Pinot Noir and JamesSuckling.com’s 96 point review describes it well, “Attractive forest berries, cherries, pomegranates, dried herbs, dried flowers, pink peppercorns, hot stones, orange rind and some smoky undertones. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins and bright acidity. So crunchy and precise with a chalky mineral backbone shaping the mid-palate. So much tension and vitality.” Certainly not your typical modern California red, but one that will keep you coming back to the glass again and again at just 13.0% alcohol.
For You If: You’re up for a delicious adventure, because you’ve never had anything quite like this; you enjoy wines bursting with flavor that stay sleek and vibrant in texture from places like cooler spots in France or Spain.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the heavyweight mouthfeel of California classics like Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel – the flavor-intensity is very high here, but without the density and velvet texture of more typical California reds.
