Organic As Julian and Sebastian Erggelet say, “With some patience, a good sombrero and German OCD, we farm with integrity and make wine that tells a story of sand, blazing sun, and howling winds off the California Delta.” Both are well-traveled winemakers and Sebastian’s day job is running Grgich Hills in Rutherford. Here they work with 55% Zinfandel, 17% Grenache, 17% Carignane and 17% Mataro, the last two planted in 1893. It’s wildly delicious and fresh, loaded with rich red and black berry fruit and smile-inducing gritty tannins and juicy acids. A terrific cookout red. Organic farming, sulfur used only at bottling.
