“AiAiAi” is the kind of thing you say with a smile when something surprising happens, and tasting Silvia Puig’s 2020 AiAiAi Priorat and then seeing the very reasonable price certainly qualifies! Like all of Silvia’s ENV wines, this comes from organically farmed vineyards on the steep slopes of Catalunya’s Priorat region. The Garnacha Negra (about half the blend), Careinyena, Syrah, Merlot and Garnacha Peluda (aka “Hairy Grenache) are harvested by hand, crushed gently, and fermented separately before aging in barrel. When ready, Silvia creates a perfect blend and bottles her tiny production – just 200 or so cases made and half that available for the entire USA.
The 2020 AiAiAi is one of those wines that announces, "Here I am, and you're going to pay attention to me!" from first swirl and sniff. The aromas are big and layered, showing notes of roasted meat, dark chocolate, garigue, Szechuan peppercorn and wet slate to complement the dark blackberry and blueberry fruit. The fruit flavors are bigger than ever here and remind us a bit of super-juicy Zinfandel, a big bowl of juicy bramble berries like blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry at first with some strawberry jam coming up with air. All that fruit is balanced by savory notes like squid ink, slate and bitter chocolate and a mouth-cleansing burst of super-fine tannins that freshen the palate and keep the black and red berry fruit and light hazelnut flavors flowing.
Vintage 2020 was super low-yielding, and there's certainly plenty of concentration here, but the balance and freshness are both superb and if you can taste or feel any alcohol here...well, I certainly can't! Already it's an utterly captivating cookout red, ready for any smoky, spiced, and/or sauced meat or veggies you pull off the grill. And it's just going to get better as the palate unpacks further and more savory elements come to the fore over the next 3-8 years. As importer Jonas Gustafsson writes, "This is a powerful vintage; it is the essence of essence. A true powerhouse and a bomb!"
