Our first thought on tasting this was, “Wow – kind of like a darker and more playful Marcillac!” Which shows you we’re a bit geeked out. A better way to say it is that this deliciously captivating red is at once plump, ripe and full of dark black cherry/berry fruit and fresh and zesty enough to keep you coming back for more. Think of Bordeaux (a whiff of herb, spice, fine structure) meeting a great Beaujolais (gushing with crunchy fruit and a touch of mineral) and you’ll be on the right track.
The Marcillac link is the grape Brocal (50%), also known as Fer in nearby Marcillac, where it creates slightly lighter “Bistro” styled reds. Around 30% Duras (a Gaillac specialty) and 20% Syrah add depth of color, richness of fruit and a fine grip of tannin that make this a beef stew and grilled meat match par excellence. Although you can certainly just enjoy this as a robust winter solo sipper and a great value Bordeaux alternative as well. Delicious wine and outstanding value.
