Lower ABV To sum up a longish story, the Marchive family of Dom des Malandes lost around 80% of their Chablis crop in the frosts of 2021. Their winemaker’s uncle, a long-time Muscadet winemaker, offered Malandes a tank of Melon de Bourgogne (the grape of Muscadet) that they could bottle to have something to sell this year. Because it’s bottled outside Muscadet, the wine is “declassified” to “Vin de France” and not allowed to say where it’s from or list a vintage on the label.
Which is probably a good thing, because even though you may know Muscadet ages well, there’s no way you’d believe a vintage 2009 Muscadet that’s been sitting in a steel tank for nearly 12 years could be so very fresh and delicious! The wine serves up a very pretty nose of fresh sea breezes, Granny Smith apple, white stone fruit and juicy Key lime. On the palate time and a warm vintage has rounded off Muscadet’s sometimes sharp edges, giving a bit of creaminess to the mouthfeel, but in no way dulling the vibrant flavors of lemon/lime, green apple and zesty sea salt minerality. A touch of lemon curd, bitter almond and almond blossom add extra interest to the salty, dry, mouthwatering finish. Certainly a Muscadet for the classic shellfish pairing, but there’s enough body (even at just 12% alcohol) and complexity to match up with fish in cream sauce or a good grilled or roasted chicken, too.
