An excellent take on old-fashioned Bordeaux, clean and fresh like a modern wine but also stylishly austere and restrained. The 30-50 year old Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%) vines are mainly on clay/limestone soils but with a portion on sand and gravel that aids in richness and flesh. Black currant and blackberry fruit is wrapped in notes of earth, stone, cedar and tobacco and complemented by a touch of smoke and spice from 12 months in French oak (all used). This will age gracefully for 10+ years but is certainly delicious now.
