Since 2012, winemaker Laura Carter and her husband Brendon have been up to something wild and fascinating in Australia’s Adelaide Hills. They’ve led the charge for less port-like ripeness, restrained/no oak, native yeasts and minimal additives (including very little sulfur). And for grapes you don’t think of as “Australian,” especially Italian varietals but beyond that, too. Like here where Laura blends Grenache, Touriga Nacional, Nero d’Avola, Shiraz and Montepulciano to create something gloriously laden with dripping black fruit, licorice and hot stone minerality. It’s joyful and glugable and, as Wine Enthusiast says in their 92 point review, open a bottle and “It will get polished off at frightening speed."
For You If: You’re curious about wines that qualify as “natural” (on some definitions) but still taste good; you want to know what those whacky Australians are up to these days; “glugable” sounds like a perfect wine descriptor to you.
Not For You If: You remember high-octane Aussie Shiraz and want to drink something like it; you’re looking for power, grip and polish; you’re wondering, “Why in the world would ‘glugable’ sound good to anyone?”
"From one of Aus's most progressive producers, this is a multi-regionally blended wine of soft edges and oodles of crowd appeal. Open-knit and sweet-fruited (but dry in taste) while still managing to feel fresh, there are notes of blueberry crumble, florals, chocolate and damp earth. It's plump and silky, mouthfilling, succulent and gently tannic. It will get polished off at frightening speed."
