Lower ABV While this is certainly an outstanding Bourgogne Rouge to delight all red Burgundy fans, the appeal is far broader than that. If you want to upgrade over the “average” sub-$40 Pinot Noir you’re normally drinking whether from Burgundy, the Willamette Valley, or pretty much anywhere else. It’s one of the best Pinot Noir values we’ve uncovered in years.
The wine comes from sixth-generation winemaker Vincent Ravaut and the only reason you don’t know his name already is that the family estate under the hill of Corton sells pretty much all the wine they want to locals and loyal fans from Paris and the rest of France. Here, Vincent works with perfectly ripe Pinot Noir fruit from Ladoix and Aloxe Corton. After sorting, it’s 100% destemmed and then allowed to ferment with some vigor, extracting plenty of dark color, flavor and structure with no hard edges at all. A short stay in previously-used French oak casks adds a hint of spice and roundness.
It's explosively fruited, but crunchy and fresh, with juicy black cherry/raspberry at the core and just a touch of sweet spice and slate-like minerality. Finishes juicy and supple, with the fine tannins nicely hidden by the fruit. A joy to drink and outstanding value.
