Ron Coleman was looking for a place to start his winery in 1998 and settled on an old firehouse on an abandoned WWII-era Army Air base outside Walla Walla. Tamarack makes a very, very, broad range of wines from Columbia Valley classics like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to more off the beaten track bottlings of Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and varietal Petit Verdot. But this cuvee - named for the firehouse where the original winery was located - remains their most successful (including two placements on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list).
A blend of nine different grapes with a year in mostly neutral oak, it’s a juicy, lighly smoky, wine with fire-engine-red fruit and a nice touch of chocolate and spice. A crowd-pleasing cookout or party red at a very nice price and just 13.8% alcohol.
"A soft-textured, juicy red with berry, chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body. Nicely fruited finish."
"The 2017 Firehouse Red is a crazy blend of 33% Syrah, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Mourvèdre, Grenache, Counoise, Sangiovese, and Petit Verdot. As always, it's a great value and has loads of ripe red and black fruits, spice, and dried flower aromas as well as a kiss of classy oak, medium body, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's a year-in, year-out no brainer."
"Appealing aromas of plum, toast, smoke, spice and cherry carry the nose. The palate brings plump, ripe fruit and barrel flavors tied together by a zip of acidity. It's a guaranteed crowd pleaser."
