Lower ABV João António Cerdeira basically started the fine wine industry in this part of Portugal when he and his parents planted alvarinho vines in their little valley vineyard, called Soalheiro or “sunny place” in 1974. This is tart and fresh at 12% alcohol done in steel with lees contact. The salty minerality and dryness recall Txakoli as much as Vinho Verde, but juicy Alvarinho stone fruit keeps the wine anchored in place. Dry, delicious, hard to stop drinking especially with little nibbles of food or a big plate of shellfish.
For You If: You like salty/minerally whites like Muscadet, Txakoli or Rias Baixas Albarino that are fully still, sharp and dry; you’re having clams, oysters, squid – pretty much anything from the sea.
Not For You If: You’re after something full of fruit like Sauvignon Blanc – this has the refreshment factor of Sauvignon, but much less overt fruit.
