Lower ABV Mathias Ruttenstock is one of the masters of Röschitz, the coolest portion of Austria’s Weinviertel, the world’s best GV growing area that also includes Kamptal, Wagram and Wachau. Mathias is a 4th generation winemaker who has won multiple awards and high ratings for his "Classic" and single-vineyard Ried Reipersberg bottlings. His total production is very small - just 1,500 cases per year - but the quality here is high enough that he was able to win the very the prestigious Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix in 2017.
With its cool climate and stony gravel and loess soils, Grüner Veltliner from Röschitz is snappier, more citrusy and spicier than in other famed regions. The 2022 edition serves up bold aromas and flavors of pink grapefruit, green melon, Granny Smith apple, juicy lemon and spicy white pepper that are joined by a distinctly mineral note on the nicely long, mouthwatering, finish. It may remind you of a ripe California Sauvignon Blanc in terms of fruit volume and style, but with peppery spice replacing Sauvignon’s grassy notes and just 12.0% alcohol. It will definitely delight you and makes a perfect wine to have on hand for visits from family and friends. And with the one liter of delight, it serves up 33% more wine than a regular 750ml bottle at a crazy low price.
