The winery makes multiple bottlings from the second-oldest vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, one that has 365 degree exposures as it slopes down the hill from its crown and is uniquely warm and calm for the AVA. This is one of two Estate Pinots that tell the story of the vineyard in total, here focusing on vines aged 12-24 years. Jim notes that, “We have discovered that at around 25 years of vine age we often see a change in the vines’ nature as they become bigger and healthier plants with deep root systems. Before this happens, the vines tend to produce fruit that is bigger, bolder, plumper and more succulent at a young age than the older vines’ wines. Therefore the Estate bottling is the richest and most precocious of all our Estate Vineyard Pinot Noirs. “

In 2021 the Estate Pinot opens with deep and dark scents of black cherry, Bing cherry, cola and a little earth that turns spicier and earthier with air. The mouthfeel is great, round and with a bit of a glycerin feel, with loads of black fruit, cola, spice and dark floral accents. The tannins are substantial but silky and the finish fresh and very generous. Certainly delicious now, but no rush.  As Jim noted last week, “bottlings dating back to 2003 and 2002 are showing incredibly well at this point.”

Jeb Dunnuck: 90 Points

"The fruit for the 2021 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard was grown in erosion-prone soils (sandstone on top of shale), which means that it takes far longer for plants to establish themselves. From vines planted between 1998 and 2010, this 2021 is expressive on opening, with dusty earth, ripe raspberry, attractive spices, and a hint of blue flowers. Juicy and plush, it’s medium to full-bodied with generous fruit that fills the palate and feels approachable and delicious now. Drink 2023-2030."
