Lower ABV Having tasted with Nicolas in Paris back in February, we’re not surprised he pulled down “Best Gamay in the World” honors at the 2021 Concours International du Gamay. The wines are definitely world class and you’ll see more of them here later this year. But don’t overlook his utterly lovely Gamay rosé which may not be “grand,” but surely is hugely delicious.
It’s 100% Gamay mainly from 60 year-old vines in Brouilly (where the award-winning Pierreux comes from). The grapes are destemmed (to avoid any harsh tannins) and then placed in a wine press. Over the course of a slow, multi-hour, pressing, just enough of Gamay’s purple skin pigment mixes in with the juice to give the wine a truly lovely, ultra-clear, light rose tint with violet accents.
Then a slow, cool, fermentation in concrete tank builds the alcohol to a cheery 12.5%, gobbles up all the sugar (this is bone dry), and develops oodles of deliciously complex flavor. Aromas and flavors of ripe watermelon, mixed red berries, crunchy cherries and a noticeable whiff of rose petal flow together beautifully in a light but mouthfilling wine that finishes dry and snappy. A fine solo sipper, for sure, and maybe even better at table with fried chicken, beef kababs, and grilled seafood of all kinds.
