Closer to the Grand Cru hill of Corton than Chorey and sharing some of Corton’s lower slopes, Aloxe-Corton gives a darker, more structured and powerful Pinot Noir with excellent complexity and aging potential. The farming and winemaking here are largely identical to Beaune Greves, including careful sorting, whole-cluster fermentation and 18 months aging in French oak (although 50% new here). But the 80 year-old vines add an extra level of intensity, power and cellar potential.
There’s plenty of ripe, rich, black cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose and palate with accents of spice, earth and smoke that build with time in the glass. The palate is a touch youthfully closed today (this will be best from 2025 and needs an hour-plus in decanter now), but already the length, purity and drive are outstanding. As is the “full mouth finish” that delivers tannic grip and flavors from the back of your palate through the middle and climbing right up the front of your gums. This is remarkably good and outstanding value for very seriously fun Burgundy Pinot Noir!
