The families that created this small grower winery began farming Champagne grapes in 1775 and started making their own wine after participating in the Champagne riots of 1911 to protest importation of cheaper grapes from the Loire Valley. After selling to the co-op through WWII, they’ve been making small quantities of Champagne from their 8 hectares of HVE-certified sustainable/organic vines since the mid-1960s, with almost all the production sold in France.
Although based at the eastern edge of the Marne Valley – Pinot Meunier country, this bottling is an 80/20 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The base wines are fermented cool and slow, age 7 months on the fine lees for richness with malolactic fermentation blocked for freshness and verve. It blends 50% wine from vintage 2017 with 50%from a "solera" or “perpetual reserve”- a tank drawn from and replenished every year - started in 2000. The older wines give this a nutty, baked pastry and brioche complexity to the lemon, lime and green apple fruit. The nutty flavors grow on the very, very, long finish where crisp apple and lime notes come up to keep things clear and refreshing. A terrific wine at table with everything from pork roast to fish in cream sauce to fiery Thai dishes. Or just ringing in the New Year!
“The NV Champagne Noir Coteaux Brut is pure and inviting with ripe boysenberry liqueur, purple flowers, and wet asphalt. On the palate, it is dry and savory, with fantastic saline minerality and grapefruit zest. This is a wonderful wine in the range to drink over the next 10-15 years.”
