Back in the 1850s, what would become Domaine Gerard Seguin was best known in Burgundy for Alexis Seguin's habit of doing his own vine grafting. So, when phylloxera devastated Burgundy's vineyards in the 1870s and 1880s, Alexis helped the region recover by grafting Burgundy vines onto American rootstocks for himself and neighbors. But it wasn't until the late 1970s that several times "great" grandson Gerard Seguin begin buying up some small plots around Gevrey Chambertin that the project turned into a commercial winery. And, today, it remains a small, family, affair, under Gerard's son, Jerome.
This is the perfect introduction to Seguin's work and style, a Gevrey-Chambertin from vines planted by Gerard's father in the 1950s and his grandfather in the 1920s. While the 2020 edition is even better, the 94 point Wine Enthusiast review for the 2019 gives you a good idea of what to expect: "Old vines between 80 and 100 years in age have produced a concentrated, structured wine. Smoky and delicious already, it has a considerable future as well. Tannins, spice from wood aging and black fruits have come together to give a wine that should be ready from 2026."
