1,453 bottles (121 cases) made.  We’ve sold every commercial release of this wine, starting with the 2011 which remains my personal benchmark for the greatest young red wine I’ve ever tasted. Until now. Somehow, Silvia has taken the wild, intense, borderline out of control, essence of Priorat and given it just enough polish and finesse and style to vault it upwards into the ranks of just plain great wines of the whole world.  While still remaining unmistakably Priorat. If you’ve bought this wine in the past, you’re nuts if you don’t buy more this year. If you’ve never tried it, please don’t miss the chance to be wowed.

Actually, the reason for the improvement here isn’t hard to understand at all.  As usual, this is a blend of Garnatxa (both “regular” and Garnatxa Peluda, “hairy” Grenache), Carinyena and Syrah from vines up to 100 years old. It’s fermented in a mixture of stainless steel and clay amphora and then ages in the fermentation barrels for 13 months.  What’s new this year is simple – Silvia has invested in very, very, VERY, high-end French oak for the new oak portion of the wine. And the impact is simply stunning.

I like Silvia’s note a lot: “Spicy and deep, showing nice and ripe blackberries, ink, graphite and smoke, with some notes of rosemary.  The Syrah is giving its wonderful touch. Very big on the palate, serious, and with very good aging capacity.”  I’ll add that this show amazing poise for its size on first opening and explodes with air (an hour is good, more is better) to unveil layer upon layer of ripe dark fruit, slate, graphite, tobacco, smoke, savory meat and dark chocolate.  Drink a bottle over 3-4 days (really – it won’t oxidize) and you’ll get a peek at what’s to come in cellar. Again, if you usually buy this, buy more this year. If you haven’t tried it, please do now.
