1891 bottles made this year, better than last year but still 10% under 2017. Almost every producer of Priorat I know would be thrilled to have Silvia's "Black Label" as their top red. Intended to be the more open, ready to enjoy, of Silvia’s two “main” Priorats it's a blend of Garnatxa Negre, Garnatxa Peluda (aka “Hairy Grenache”) and Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat. She ferments the wine in a mixture of clay amphora and 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months. The results are breathtaking.
This is the most serious and complete Black Label botting yet, so worth decanting now and really digging into from 2024. You’ll find all the usual aroma and flavor descriptors apply – fresh and dried blueberry, black raspberry, sweet spice, hints of smoke and vanilla, and loads of cracked slate minerality. What sets it apart is mouthfeel, structure and finish. There’s a sense of flesh here gives the wine amplitude witout any sense of heaviness or thickness. The combination of shockingly good acidity (for a wine from Priorat) and gently gripping, highly polished, tannins give excellent drinkability. And the dusty slate, fresh acids, and tannic squeeze at the end propels a long, captivating, finish of super-ripe blueberry, red raspberry, blackberry, berry blossom and spice flavors that just don’t quit. A terrific wine.
