Jean-Marie Royer’s everyday wine is a blend of fruit (Mourvedre) from vineyards just outside of Chateauneuf plus Grenache, Syrah and a little Alicante from a vineyard inside the Chateauneuf boundary that wasn’t included in the AOC. Plus a little Chateauneuf du Pape wine that didn't quite fit the blends for those wines. He should really be allowed to call this a Cotes du Rhone, but the rules say he must label it as "Vin de Table" and not make any note on where it's from or vintage (although, as you can see, he cheats a bit there).
This is my favorite vintage of Petit Roy yet and, as we write most years, the 2020 La Petit Roy isn’t very “Petit” even at a modest (for the Rhone these days) 14.5% alcohol. As Decanter Magazine said about the 90 point 2019 edition, this shows “Tangy berry acidity, remarkable length of chewy blackberry coulis and liquorice, with enough interest on the nose to keep you sniffing.” The scent of Provençal garrigue – thyme, rosemary, lavender, black olive – is especially strong this year and the texture remarkably silky as the wine delivers big red raspberry, black cherry and roasted strawberry fruit. Very fine, firm, tannins and a nice briskness give this the potential to improve 4-5 years, although it’s so delicious that there’s certainly no reason to wait. Very Provençal and pretty enough to serve at a party but with more than enough heft to pair with leftover leg of lamb or a big bowl of ratatouille. Fantastic value for a “baby CdP.”
