Organic/Bio Lower ABV As Burghound suggested, a little bit of "mid-term cellaring" has done good things here! A big whiff of crushed seashell and seashore has joined the lovely pear and green citrus fruit on the nose. The fruit remains ripe and generous but the minerality has kept coming to the fore on the palate, creating lovely tension and depth. Boatloads of bitter lemon, citrus peel and salty seashell flavors pop on the fine, focused, finish. It's certainly ready but will keep on improving for at least another half-dozen years.
NOTE: to manage Virginia regulatory issues, these bottles carry the winery's "extra" label, Maison Jaine, normally used for private label wines in France. Same wine from the same bottling and bin, just with a different label for VA.
"The 2018 Chablis Les Fourneaux Vieilles Vignes 1er Crucomes from just over a hectare of 45-year-old vines and sees 8–15 months in stainless steel. It has an earthy bouquet, not a million miles away from an aged Chenin Blanc, with touches of wet wool. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, light orange pith and lemon zest notes and a fine sense of harmony toward the finish. This is a lovely Fourneaux from Angele and Ludovic Barat."
"This aromatically resembles the Petit Chablis as the ripe and agreeably fresh nose is comprised primarily by green fruit and mineral reduction aromas. The rich and succulent medium weight flavors are finer than they usually are and the firm, saline and bitter lemon finish is both refreshing and complex. This well-made effort should also amply reward mid-term cellaring."
