Lower ABV Sitting off by itself on the “Left Bank” of Chablis, Cote de Lechet is a low but very steep hill – up to 38 degrees at some points – fully exposed to the afternoon sun. It’s rocky soils of wind and freeze-cracked limestone drain freely and Chardonnay ripens quickly here, usually one of the very first 1er cru sites picked each year. Angèle Barat’s approach of picking just ripe (but not beyond that!) fruit and making the wine with no oak is especially successful here.
The aromas are bold and definitely “Chablis,” with a noticeable iodine center to the white citrus and seashell scents. The salty/iodine notes show front and back on the palate, with a lovely freshness to the white and green citrus and apple flavors in the middle. Very long and mouthwatering at the end, but not at all hard-edged, this will welcome shellfish and seafood pairings, but doesn’t need them. As Burghound says, “Lovely.”
“Here the nose clearly signals 'this is Chablis' with its aromas of quinine, citrus confit, iodine and tidal pool. The sleek, highly energetic and well-detailed middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality that carries over to the youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. Lovely.”
