We’ll admit a bias first: we’re not huge fans of New World Cabernet Franc and haven’t encountered many convincing examples from South America to date. Seeing this one from Argentina and with 4+ years in bottle did not raise our hopes. Which goes to show you can’t judge a wine until it’s in your mouth. Because this is damn delicious.
It’s from the very high-altitude (1,700 meters, more than one mile up) Andes Mountain vineyard in the tiny hamlet of Chanarmuyo of Salta’s La Rioja region. The high-desert conditions here – brilliant sun days, biting chill at night – allow Cabernet Franc to ripen through any green notes while still holding vivid acids and alcohol of just 13.7%. Bright red cherry fruit, dusty cocoa powder and a tiny touch of freshening mint meld together beautifully in wine that fills your mouth with flavor while gliding across your palate like silk. Bold, pure and focused, it finishes with a feel of silk and lingering notes of cherry, red currant, cocoa and spice. More than enough volume to handle steak but sleek and silky enough to be your new favorite all-purpose sipping and dinner red. A terrific find (that we almost didn’t taste).
