Organic/Bio Massimiliano Calabretta is as close to a “natural winemaker” as we’ve found on Etna so far, with organic farming and minimal cellar work and loads of respect for his old vines. The family has made wine on Etna since the early 1900s, but has only bottled since 1997. They are less interested in single-contrada wines and more on what can be done blending fruit from across their 13HA of vines across the volcano. This comes primarily from 50+ year-old vines in Feudo di Mezzo.
As Wine Advocate says in the 93 point review, this “is bright and lifted with sour cherry and fragrant violet or iris. You taste some of the skin-like flavors that come with extended macerations. There is a hint of volatility too, but it only adds to the immediate intensity of the punchy bouquet. This is a very likable and genuine expression from the Sicilian volcano. It closes with ashy sensations and crushed peppercorn.”
