Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.” Having tasted every vintage since then, we think this is one of the best releases of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date. As usual, it’s a blend of around 85% Garnacha plus Tempranillo and a splash of Syrah, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region. Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s full of rich red cherry/berry fruit with a dash of wild herb flavors and aromas. Big on the palate, but nicely balanced by a touch of cherry juice acidity and broad, lightly grippy tannins that make your mouth water without getting in the way of solo sipping. As the late Josh Raynolds said about a previous release, “This wine is ridiculously easy to drink and delivers really great value.”
For You If: Bold and gutsy reds are your thing and you don’t mind getting them at really low prices; you’re after a crowd-pleasing red that goes down well with or without food; you’re like me and just really like Garnacha/Grenache.
Not For You If: You like your reds light and/or smooth – this is bold, 14.5% alcohol, and has pleasing grip on the finish; red raspberry/berry fruit doesn’t appeal.
