Current winemaker Kirk Venge’s father, Nils, created this wine to honor his first winery dog, a rescue Lab named Scout. And, like Scout, it’s definitely a mixed-breed! Even more so for the 2021 release which now includes 30% Sonoma County fruit to go with 70% Napa grapes, all from very old vines (most 100+ years-old). This year's blend is a full 76% Zinfandel, giving the wine its fleshy mouth feel and big, bold, fruit. Charbono (14%) adds juiciness and a hint of licorice. Petit Sirah from Dry Creek gives the wine more purple-fruited intensity and some tannic spine, while Syrah (2%) adds smoky hints and a bit more depth. Time in barrel rounds off the edges and adds still more spice. It's a typical, bold and rich, Scout's Honor! As Bob Parker said a few years ago, “It is a hedonistic fruit bomb, for sure, but also intellectually pleasing.”
