Organic/Bio Limit 3 bottles per customer, please. Marc de Grazia says Bocca d'Orzo, like San Lorenzo next door, "has always been esteemed as one of the most important Contradas of Etna." But only by old-timers, as the entire vineyard was covered by a lava flow in 1981. Growers have trucked in topsoil in an attempt to revitalize the vineyard, but de Grazia discovered one tiny slice of 70 year-old vines that somehow escaped the lava flow. He calls it the "dagala" - Sicilian for "island" - of Boca d'Orzo and made his first wine here in 2019. Just three barrels made of a reborn legend.
"What a nose! Red cherry, blueberry, crushed thyme, wild rosemary and iron. Medium-bodied with fantastic subtlety and nuance. Fine, silky tannins are wrapped in lovely ripe fruit. So attune to itself. Even-keeled and long, with mineral complexity that coats the palate. From organically grown grapes. 1,700 bottles only. Best after 2025."
