Lower ABV In the Wachau's very own classification system, "Smaragd" is the top level, the region's best wines with the most alcohol, signature long corks, and the emerald lizard on the neck. Bergistal is a Smaragd blended from fruit from Martin's magnificent sites, some at nose-bleed altitudes for sizzling energy and minerality, other from lower sites for ripe tropical fruit and palate-coating richness. Pretty perfect in 2021!
Wine Enthusiast's 94 point rave for the 2019 edition gives you a good idea of what to expect: "The aromas on the nose are subdued, giving a slight hint of yeast. The slender yet concentrated palate holds yeasty, salty promise and comes with a slightly pithy texture. This is still tightly coiled and needs to unfold, but freshness and savoriness will stand it in good stead."
