Expect the unexpected here, starting with the grapes - 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 70% Muskat Ottonel, a Muscat/Chasselas cross created in 1852 to deliver some of Muscat's exotic perfume with a bit less weight. The grapes grow on flat plains near Burgenland, Austria's, large, shallow lake called the Neusiedlersee. In fall, as the grapes ripen, fog from the lake covers the vines every morning and then burns off in the afternoons. The wet/dry cycle promotes the growth of botrytis (or "Noble Rot"), a fungus that desiccates the grapes, concentrates the sugars, and adds a unique honey and floral note of its own.
With concentrated, flavorful, fruit like this, Ernst Steindorfer didn't do much "winemaking" - pressing off the little juice the grapes give, fermentation and aging in steel, and bottling at the end. The results are intense, deep, rich, and while decadently sweet, also nicely balanced by a squirt of Sauvignon Blanc acidity at the end. This will match up beautifully with classic American holiday pies - apple, pumpkin, pecan - but we love it best with a bit of savory bleu cheese in the moonlight or by a warming fire. The half-bottle serves 4 people nicely.
"Musk, rose petal, fir honey and dried fig are the rich aromas on the nose. The intense palate is lusciously sweet and very concentrated, showing a viscous, almost balm-like mouthfeel that seems to burst with luscious fruit. Equally concentrated is the sharp freshness that brings everything alive. What a package. Drink by 2050."
