Lower ABV In Spain, “Rueda” is practically a generic term for clean, fresh, nicely fruited white wine to enjoy with all kinds of foods or just by itself while watching a summer sunset. Which is surprising since the Rueda region – on the high plateau of Castilla y Leon, about 90 miles northwest of Madrid – was mainly known for strange, oxidized, whites made from Palomino Fino – the grape of Sherry country to the south.
Things changed from the 1990s with the arrival of temperature controlled stainless steel and a commitment to the region’s best white grape, Verdejo. We think of Verdejo as a little like Sauvignon Blanc in California, but with the grapefruit notes replaced by riper orange/tangerine citrus. This is a great example, made for master sommelier/importer Fran Kysela and right now selling for a song. It’s loaded with juicy tangerine, kumquat, lime and peach fruit that picks up a hint of salty stone on the mouthwatering finish. A terrific party, cookout and picnic white value!
