A gloriously gutsy, highly drinkable, blend of 50% grenache, 40% old carignan and 10% syrah on clay/sandstone soils in a slice of Cotes du Rhone just under the hills of Vacqueyras. In some years, Eric Bouletin makes this with wine from two harvests – that’s why it’s labeled “Vin de France” – but this release is all 2020 Cotes du Rhone. Unlike his other wines, for Les Grands Chemins Eric picks his entire Cotes du Rhone vineyard at once, sorts and crushes the grapes, and them ferments all three varietals together in a single concrete tank where the wine also ages. He believes this gives the wine more harmony and finesse, and perhaps that’s true. We know for sure that almost all the 400 case production never leaves France, so we’re excited to have it to offer you.
In 2020, this serves up big aromas and flavors of juicy blackberry, baked plum, blueberry and black raspberry fruit on the nose and palate. All perfectly matched by a base note of melted dark chocolate and savory lash of grilled rosemary and thyme. There's a sense of creaminess to the wine in the middle and then a super-fine tannic grip and squirt of fresh-picked berry tang through the satisfying finish. Certainly a terrific cookout red for steaks, burgers, sausages and lamb, but also a great wine to cozy up to when the weather turns chillier this fall and winter.
