Aglianico is Campania’s most important red grape and examples from the Taurasi region show so much power, intensity, and cellar potential they’ve come to be called “the Barolo of the south.” Luigi Moio makes a pair of terrific Taurasi bottlings. But they sell for $150-$200 and need years to show their best. The Aglianico Terra d’Eclano gives a taste of Taurasi Aglianico magic at a much more attractive price and built to enjoy now (although it will certainly improve in cellar for the balance of the decade). Lovely intensity to the fruit and plenty of firm, but polished, power.
“The 2020 Aglianico Terra d'Eclano is a model of class, with a gorgeous bouquet of violet, lavender, dried blueberries and incense. Its silky textures soothe as polished red and black fruits flow across a core of vibrant acidity. Rosy inner florals emerge over a staining of gentle tannins. Black tea, tart wild berries and citrus notes slowly fade. The 2020 is a remarkably pretty yet complex interpretation of Terra d'Eclano.”
