When Manoel de Boullosa purchased Quinta dos Pesos in 1968, the wine Carcavelos wine region was already obscure and little known beyond Lisbon. While M. de Bullosa continually crafted Carcavelos through his death in 2005, he put little effort into actually selling the wines. So over the year, cask after cask of wine from vintage after vintage rested quietly in the cellar, getting richer, deeper and more complex. Until 2018 when importer Haus Alpenz and their partners discovered the riches hidden there. And began bottling small lots of Quinta dos Pesos Carcavelos from different casks each year.
The 1997 has always been a favorite here in the shop and, like all Carcavelos, is somewhere between a 20 year Tawny Port and a zesty Verdelho Madeira in style. A mélange of singed citrus peel and nice dollop of salted caramel blends nicely with the dried fig and date fruit and the hint of bitter orange on the mouthwatering finish. Lovely with a sweet/savory dish like she-crab soup or with nuts and cheese before or after dinner. Once open, keep cool and enjoy over 4-5 months.
