Organic/Bio Andrea Franchetti was one of the very first winegrowers to understand that the keys to making compelling Nerello Mascalese on Mount Etna's northern slopes were old vines and low yields. The first season after purchasing his original plots in contrada Guardiola, he invited the former owner to come join him in making a "green harvest" - cutting off excess grape bunches to create better concentration and ripeness. The old owner lasted 15 minutes watching Franchetti dropping 5-10 bunches per vine to leave just five remaining before fleeing to the local bar and announcing that he'd sold his vineyard to a madman.
Very much method to this madness as you'll taste here. Where most Etna producers make an "Etna Rosso" from their younger and/or higher-yielding vines, Franchetti decided to only use fruit from vines 70-100+ years old cropped to 5-7 bunches per vine in Etna's best sites (this is 45% from Guardiola itself). The result is a wonderfully concentrated Nerello with the grape's usual sweet ripe cherry/berry fruit complemented by complex savory, spice and camphor accents. Delicious, ready, and giving delight through 2029.
"Roses and cherries galore waft up from the 2019 Passorosso with ease. This is silky-smooth and cool-toned in feel, mixing juicy acidity with a pleasant inner sweetness that creates a seductively vibrant yet fruit forward expression. The 2019 cleans up beautifully, leaving a coating of round tannins that create a classically dry feel, as hints of spiced citrus and hard red candies slowly fade. The pleasure factor is turned up high here, and the balance is on point."
