Organic/Bio Lower ABV So your grandfather decides to retire and gives you 2.5 acres of Languedoc Carignan planted in the 1930s. If you're Amelie d'Hurlaborde, you move on from the graphic design work you've been doing on Rhone Valley wine labels and start a winery! And make some really crazy good wines that defy expectations for a region we think of as the hot, dry, hope to big, fat, reds.
With vines at 150-400 meters elevation and hard up against the mountains of the Massif Central, Amelie's fruit gets ripe and full of flavor, but maintains astonishing freshness and vibrancy. Here she blends around 60% organically grown Grenache with equal parts Carignan, Mourvedre and Syrah and raises it half in foudre and half in old barrels for 18 months. Fresh blueberry, raspberry and cherry fruit show accents of sweet spice and licorice and finish with fine tannins and minerality. Decant for more fruit and body and drink over the next 10 years. Really good.
