Organic/Bio A lot of wine for the money here! Philippe Bravay took a 250+ year-old property in and around Chateauneuf du Pape back to its roots when he started bottling his own wine in 2000. Farming is now organic, yields are low and the wines done all in steel, giving them an old-school savory intensity to match modern day rich, ripe, fruit. Here he blends 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah plus Carignan and the old Vaccarèse grape to create a Cotes du Rhone of spicy intensity with lots of earthy edges to the dark fruit and a finish of nice power and length. Don’t be afraid to decant it and let it open up or just enjoy with anything smoky or earthy from the grill or oven.
For You If: You like your rich, ripe, Southern Rhone fruit to be balanced by traditional earthy, spicy, peppery, notes and to finish with an attractive level of grip; you’re looking for something to drink with lamb burgers – this would be great!
Not For You If: You’re after the super-fruity, super-broad, Cotes du Rhones so often found in modern climate-change times that are all about Grenache’s flesh and red raspberry fruit – this is more savory and complex than that and much more focused and darkly intense.
