Greves is the largest 1er Cru in Beaune and one of the best (including the central portion known as Vigne d'Enfant Jésus). As the name suggests, the soil here is broken up by lots of limestone gravel which creates outstanding drainage and forces the vines to dig deep for nutrients and water. Pascal Maillard makes about 800 cases per year from his small plot here. After hand harvest, the bunches of Pinot Noir are sorted to remove any with imperfect grapes and then go into the fermenter for 15 days before spending 18 months in 40% new French oak.
The combination of whole cluster fermentation, the gravely soils and 2019 vintage give a wine that perfectly blends power and grace. On the nose, dark red raspberry and cherry fruit mingle with notes of earthy spice and smoke. On the palate, the fruit stays dark and present but the rich earth, smoke and spice notes take center stage, making this one of Pascal’s most savory Pinot Noirs. The finish is earthy, smoky and firm, with the fine tannins helping push up the ripe fruit and black tea flavors that linger nicely. Decant for an hour now and enjoy at peak from 2025-2035+. A terrific Greves.
