Here's the deal. Doug loves this wine. Most of the rest of the team aren't so sure. You'll have to make the call...but if you skip it, you'll be missing a whole lot of silly grinning fun! (Says the guy who gets to write these notes).
Navarra Garnacha isn't really a thing. The region is shadowed by more famous Rioja to the south and is mostly hot and known for chunky "value" reds. But this is from St Martin de Unx near Baja Montana, in Navarra's north where a touch of cooling sea breeze from the Atlantic Ocean creeps in. And from a winemaker, David Sampedro, who is all about gentle farming and very gentle winemaking vs pounding out the plonk.
Here, in a wine he's christened "Tears of Grenache" you'll find all of this often overworked grape's charm and joy. Aromas of ripe strawberry and red cherry pick up a hint of the wild, herby, scrub note the French call "garrigue." On the palate the fruit is REALLY ripe - cherry, strawberry, raspberry - that's kept from going over the edge by a lovely sense of purity and finesse. Fine tannins and a squirt of cherry juice acidity cleans up a fun, fruity, dry, finish. A patio pounder that can take a chill if you like and will certainly show nicely with grilled summer vegetables and romesco sauce. Or sausages. Or burgers. Or Tuesday night.
