Delpine Laborde’s first (just 250 case) release of NV Champagne from the hill of Nogent near Riems is…well, really, really, good. It’s Pinot Noir (75%) and Chardonnay, just over half 2020 with 45% 2019 and 2018 reserve wine. She raised the base wine on the lees for 8 months and then gave the Champagne two years on the lees. It’s delicious, showing plenty of Pinot generosity and red fruit (cherry, currant) balanced by Chardonnay’s cut and a touch of toast as a bonus. The finish is very, very, long and dry with the fruit dancing nicely over a bit of brioche and chalk. A terrific wine for table and also open and ripe enough to just sip at a party. Expect big things here.
