A stunning vintage Champagne from organically farmed Chardonnay from vines planted on chalk in 1982 high on the Nogent hill. There are just three-quarters of an acre of vines from cuttings taken by sélection massale from an even older Nogent site. A small forest just above the vineyard at the very top of the hill traps cool air that flows down on the east-facing vines after the sun moves to the west each afternoon. The fruit is hand harvested, fermented with native yeast, and allowed to rest on steel tanks until assemblage in May (extra late by modern Champagne standards). The miniscule 87 cases made were disgorged in March of 2022 and finished with 5 g/l of dosage.
The technical tasting note here is “Whack-a-doodle delicious.” The aromas show Asian pear, white peach and nectarine fruit with bold accents of toast, ginger and clove. On the palate, it’s crunchy and crisp, but still generous, with flavors that highlight juicy pear, spice, persimmon and marzipan notes that flow on through a long, driven, finish. This is the first base wine made in the Laborde’s new cellar, two years before Delphine left her job as head white wine maker at Veuve Clicquot, and as fine as it is now, it will be better still over the next 6-8 years.
